The One Thing

I decided to call my latest record Worth Fighting For because I felt like the common theme woven into every song was that things worth having usually require some intense effort. Our relationships, our dreams and our faith are all things that we will lose if we don’t wake up every day and fight for them. The songs I have written on this record are intended to challenge the listener to fight for the things that matter.
The first song on the album is called “The One Thing.” I wanted to start the record off with a reminder that God thinks you and I are worth fighting for. He crossed the distance from heaven to earth to live among us, to know us, suffer for us, die for us and conquer death so that we wouldn’t have to be separated from Him ever again.
The chorus says, “Your love is the one thing that I can’t run out of.” You and I can run out of money; we can run out of friends; eventually, our time on earth will even run out, but we can never run out of the love of God.
The second verse says, “Such conviction, there’s no question I was being chased/Goodness and mercy both followed me/I was stalked by grace.” I had this idea of an escaped prisoner running through the woods, with the hounds right on his heels. God is chasing us down in that way with His goodness and His mercy. No matter how fast we run, we can’t escape Him. He will get us. Goodness and mercy are nipping at your heels. You can’t outrun His love.
Invest in the things that are worth fighting for in your life, and remember that Christ is fighting for you.

The One Thing
(Warren Barfield, Charlie Peacock)
There was a time when all was broken
The fault was mine
I watched my bridges burning
I had started the fire
I ran out of hope, I ran out of excuses
I ran out of time, I ran into You and learned
That Your love is the one thing
That I can’t run out of
Your love is the one thing
That’s always been enough
There is never a time when You’re not by my side
You’ve proven Your love
Is the one thing that I can’t run out of
Such conviction, there’s no question
That I was being chased
Goodness and mercy both followed me
I was stalked by grace
I ran out of fear, I ran out of losing
I ran here and found You running to me
There is never a time when You’re not by my side
You’ve proven Your love
Is the one thing
Your love is the one thing
